IRS Safeguards Electronic Income Tax Filings With EMC Enterprise Storage
EMC Software to Protect Mission-Critical Data Across Two Sites Located 650 Miles Apart
HOPKINTON, Mass.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--April 14, 1999-- EMC Corporation, the world's leading provider of enterprise storage systems, software and services, announced today that EMC Enterprise Storage systems and advanced business continuity software have enabled the U.S. Internal Revenue Service (IRS) to manage and safeguard its rapidly growing volumes of electronic filings.

By 2007, the IRS expects to handle 80 percent of filings electronically to improve ease of use for taxpayers, operational efficiency and employee productivity. The IRS, which already processes 300,000 returns a day at a single service center during a peak period, anticipates this number will increase to one million by the time its consolidation of five service centers to two is complete. To reach that goal, the IRS has implemented EMC Enterprise Storage systems to ensure that all of its information is secure and available to meet stringent processing deadlines.

The IRS, based in Washington, D.C., installed two EMC Symmetrix Enterprise Storage systems - in two service centers located 650 miles apart. The agency uses EMC Symmetrix Remote Data Facility software to provide remote mirroring and recovery of data between the two sites to ensure continuity of service in the event one of the sites becomes disabled.

The EMC Symmetrix systems operate in a heterogeneous computing environment to manage, share and protect information from both Unisys mainframes and UNIX-based NCR servers.

''EMC Enterprise Storage is enabling the IRS to create a sturdy, flexible infrastructure that will deliver ultimate protection of its information resources and seamlessly grow with its rapidly expanding electronic filings segment,'' said Bob Dutkowsky, EMC's Executive Vice President of Markets and Channels. ''EMC's superior information management, sharing and protection capabilities are ideally suited for organizations where continuous access to information is the lifeblood of their operations.''

EMC Corporation, a Fortune 500 company based in Hopkinton, Massachusetts, is the world's technology and market leader in the rapidly growing market for intelligent enterprise storage systems, software and services. The company's products store, retrieve, manage, protect and share information from all major computing environments, including UNIX, Windows NT and mainframe platforms. The company has offices worldwide, trades on the New York Stock Exchange under the symbol EMC, and is a component of the S&P 500 Index.
