I agree with you that creativity cannot and probably need not be taught. It is possible though to foster or suppress creativity. More to my point, there is a continuum between creativity and junk. Often the difference between the two is presence of mastery of the underlying material. I cannot help but think that a budding poet who has read widely within the poetic literature will 1) have inspirations from that reading, and 2) show better craft in expressing his ideas.

Allowing the praise of undisciplined noise as "creative expression" is something I see happening. My feeling is that in a more literate society, the audience would be less tolerant of this. "Alf" would never have been a prime-time hit. :-(

True, but once creativity is recognized, it has to be combined with technique, and that takes many years of hard training. Creativity without craftsmanship is the mark of the dilettante.
