U.S. Court of Appeals Rules for AMD in Patent Dispute With Altera

Business Wire - April 12, 1999 14:54

SUNNYVALE, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--April 12, 1999--The United States Court of Appeals for the Federal Circuit has
reversed a lower court decision in a patent dispute between AMD and Altera Corporation. In a decision released
Wednesday, April 7, the court ruled that Altera is not licensed to eight AMD patents covering programmable logic devices
that are now owned by Vantis Corporation, a wholly owned subsidiary of AMD. The court also affirmed an earlier judgment
that AMD is licensed to five Altera patents at issue in the case.

The dispute arose out of a lawsuit brought by AMD in 1994 against Altera for patent infringement. The trial court had entered
a judgment in favor of Altera based on a jury verdict that Altera was licensed to the disputed patents. Wednesday's ruling by
the United States Court of Appeals reversed the trial court judgment, holding as a matter of law that Altera was not licensed
to the patents.
