JGoren,

there is no such thing as fair trade, just negotiated trade.

WTO entry based on the simple fact that China didn't meet the set qualifications

what qualifications are you talking about and who decided what these qualifications are? If China or any other country employed your services as a trade representative, you may have a different point of view.

Do you think it is "fair" that US companies should be allowed to own foreign companies just because US allows foreign ownership of US companies? Think it through carefully and the answer will not be as obvious as it first appears.

History, unfortunately is not on the side of US and the Europeans, when it comes to fair trade. Do you remember slave trade? How about the dope dealers who waged the opium war? Don't forget that Perry guy who blasted cannons in Tokyo Bay until the Japanese agreed to open up their market. This type of "ram it down your throat" strategy prevails in trade talks today.

Judging from how we are doing, I don't think we have been getting the short end of the stick when it comes to trade.

Don't want to get into big long debate on this trade issue. I just wanted to point out an opposing point of view.

Ramsey

You're right that China did not meet the requirements for entry into WTO, but I'm suggesting that Clinton used the recalitrance of certain members of both parties in Congress to say to the Chinese, in effect, "Gee, I'm all in favor of entry, but there's nothing I can do with this Congress at this time." Sort of gets him off the hook.
