U.S. urges IMF gold sales to fund debt
relief

WASHINGTON, April 13 (Reuters) - The U.S. Treasury on
Tuesday urged Congress to clear the way for Washington to
approve selling gold from International Monetary Fund reserves
and said this would fund essential programs of debt relief.

Treasury Deputy Assistant Secretary William Schuerch said the idea was part of a six-point debt
reduction plan announced by President Bill Clinton earlier this year.
