Company Press Release SOURCE: Telogy Networks, Inc. Broadcom(R), NetSpeak(R), and Telogy Networks(R) Demonstrate Voice over IP Cable Modem Reference Design with Call Agent Interface at VON Show Demonstration to Run Continuously at Telogy Booth #506 LAS VEGAS, Voice On The Net '99 - April 14 /PRNewswire/ -- Industry leaders Broadcom Corporation® (Nasdaq: BRCM - news), NetSpeak® Corporation (Nasdaq: NSPK - news), and Telogy Networks, Inc.® today announced the first live demonstration of Broadcom and Telogy's Voice over IP (Internet Protocol)- enabled cable modem reference design, interfaced to NetSpeak's call agent software. The companies' products enable telephone calls over cable networks. Leading multiple system operators, notably AT&T, Time Warner, and Comcast/MediaOne, are focused on providing primary line IP telephony services over their broadband networks.
The demonstration is intended to showcase the companies' newest offerings to the cable and Internet telephony industries at the IP telephony industry's premier conference and trade show, Voice on the Net. Broadcom and Telogy Networks market their products to cable modem and head-end manufacturers, who in turn provide solutions to cable television system operators. NetSpeak markets its call agent software directly to cable system operators.
''It's Voice over IP that is the key application for cable modems, not high speed Internet access,'' commented Jeff Pulver, President of Pulver.com. ''When AT&T and Comcast begin rolling out their new networks, cable modem manufacturers will be there with the products they need, thanks to the work of pioneering companies like Broadcom, NetSpeak, and Telogy, and other companies entering this new marketspace.''
''Clearly, no one company can go it alone in this exploding industry,'' observed David Bukovinsky, Director, PacketCable, CableLabs®, Inc. ''CableLabs welcomes this initiative from this group of PacketCable(TM) participants, Broadcom, Telogy Networks, and NetSpeak. Such collaboration among leading companies echos the goals of the PacketCable project to help speed the pace of innovation and interoperability to support our vision of bringing broadband telephony to the cable industry.''
The Telogy - Broadcom Voice over IP cable modem reference design, the BCM93300V, is now available to Broadcom and Telogy customers featuring a Broadcom cable modem chipset and daughter card integrated with Telogy's award- winning Golden Gateway® Voice over IP embedded communications software.
The design incorporates Broadcom's BCM3300 QAMLink(TM) DOCSIS 1.1- Compliant Single-Chip Cable Modem, a digital signal processor (DSP), and Telogy's Golden Gateway Voice and Fax over IP (V/FoIP) embedded communications software. Telogy's software differentiates itself by efficiently and effectively addressing Quality of Service (QoS) issues such as network delay, jitter, and lost packets. It also incorporates compression, line echo cancellation (G.168 compliant), tone detection, and compliance with the new network interface protocol SGCP/ MGCP. Golden Gateway's telephony signaling software addresses the complications of translating between traditional telephony signals and modern data networks such as those being built by cable providers. It interacts with telephony equipment, translating signaling into data messages that are used to set up cable network phone calls.
NetSpeak and Telogy developed the two components that comprise the SGCP/MGCP protocol software which enables Internet phone calls to be made across cable networks. These protocols are aligned with the recently released PacketCable Network Based Call Signaling Specification. Telogy developed the SGCP/MGCP client signaling software for the residential gateway, and NetSpeak developed the call agent technology. Telogy's SGCP/MGCP client signaling software enables telephone calls across IP networks, in conjunction with call control features of the call agent. At least eight signaling-related events are involved in the ''simple'' act of hearing a dial tone, dialing a number and connecting to another telephone. All these steps require complex interaction between the client and call agent software. This interaction (which includes the translation of telephone numbers to Internet addresses) is controlled by the SGCP/MGCP protocol, which ensures the proper transmission of set-up, maintenance, billing and tear-down messages. NetSpeak's call agent is an advanced call control manager that oversees multiple hardware devices in delivering enhanced telephony and multimedia services over IP networks. The call agent employs a unique architecture whereby principal intelligence for call control resides in centralized network servers, an approach which will speed the deployment of sophisticated telephony services in IP environments.
Cable modem manufacturers interested in implementing VoIP-enabled cable modems should contact Broadcom (regarding the BCM93300V reference design) and Telogy (regarding the Golden Gateway V/FoIP-enabling software). MSOs planning to implement IP telephony services should contact NetSpeak Corporation regarding the call agent software.
