DIGITAL TERRESTRIAL GETS GOOD START

ONdigital, the UK's digital terrestrial television pay-TV service, has signed up 110,000 subscribers since launching in November.
This compares with the 120,000 new subscribers which Sky Digital signed up in a similar period from launch. Sky Digital is available to almost all UK households while ONdigital reaches about 70%, rising to about 90% during 1999. more work for Divicom

While the subscriber figures look good the broadcast press has suggested that all kinds of tricks were being used to get the number past the crucial 100,000. One rumour told of Granada staff being offered decoders for 5 pounds (retail 199) with subscriptions at 1.99 a month (7.99).

Meanwhile the Bush electronics brand has announced that it will be the first to offer integrated TV/ONdigital decoder units – costing about 500 pounds, during this spring. Other manufacturers are expected to follow.

ONdigital, which is owned by Granada and Carlton, is expected to move into profit once it is serving two million subscribers, which it estimates will take about five years.

ONdigital also plans to add interactive services. It is widely expected that NTL, one of the owners of SDN which also has a digital terrestrial licence, will launch interactive services over terrestrial digital TV during the next year. NTL's service has already been launched over standard telephone lines and high speed access via cable will be added later this year. It would not be surprising if ONdigital chose to back this initiative.

Fred,

Been watching this ca-ca-canine periodically, but don't have much money left in it. My email should still work.

Nice call on DISH. I bailed out slightly too soon, but still like watching them.

Go Dog go.
