Tim A., DMG, Caxton: Your analysis re. exercise of options conforms with my understanding. Intuitively, one might think that one's holding period of the exercised shares tacks on to the period during which the call option was held (i.e., just as the basis in the option (plus commission) is added to the exercise price thereof. But, as I understand it, the holding period for the shares commences with the date of exercise. FWIW: the other poster's postulated possibility was so ragged, it's not to be trusted.

On a separate note, from the UNPH thread--read the last graph:

could it be 50% rise in price in last six weeks?
sometimes no real reason, techs generally down somewhat
people so often must point to reasons
market is not rational, but emotional and momentum machine
looking for an entry here

got a question:
Uniphase has yet to turn profit... clearly a leader in optical muxing and more... Fitel dovetails nicely product lines... non-conglomerate nature clears path for many big customers... might be "Intel of Optics" in next decade... but

puny $170M in sales... certainly acquiring Fitel sales
on multiple of sales basis, priced at 29 x sales !!!
is price discounting next $B in sales?
expensive until price comes down or mega-sales become evident

case in point: other nextgen leader Qualcom is rocketing, but selling at just over 3xsales
