Barry, Article... Intel Provides Small Businesses With Faster Internet Access; Introduces Analog Modem Bonding for the Intel InBusiness Internet Station...

April 13, 1999

HILLSBORO, Ore.--(BUSINESS WIRE) - Intel Corporation today announced the addition of analog modem bonding to the Intel(R) InBusiness(TM) Internet Station helping to significantly increase availability and speed for small business customers connecting to the Internet.

Analog modem bonding is a technology allowing two or three analog connections to be combined providing a larger access pipe to the Internet. Whereas an average analog Internet connection transfers information, faxes or email up to 56 Kbps (kilobits per second), analog modem bonding combines the capability of up to three modems for approximately 168 Kbps, a speed faster than that of ISDN. Analog modem bonding is likened to using three straws instead of one to consume a soft drink, thereby allowing the consumption of three times the amount of liquid possible through a single straw.

"We've all been in those twiddle-your-thumbs situations, waiting for the modem and Internet connection to catch up with our requests," said Brad Romney, business unit manager, Intel Small Business Networking Operation. "Analog modem bonding takes the wait out of Internet access and helps our customers do business faster and more efficiently."

In addition to increased efficiency and speed, analog modem bonding helps small businesses decrease Internet access expenses. Intel has conducted its own studies indicating that a small business customer can save approximately $1,088 per year(a) by using the Intel InBusiness Internet Station versus using five separate modems and ISP (Internet Service Provider) accounts. Analog modem bonding allows small business customers to experience increased savings and increased productivity with faster access to the web and faster processing of Internet exchanges.

The Intel InBusiness Internet Station is an addition to Intel's expanding line of Intel InBusiness network appliances and strategy to offer such benefits as easy installation, enhanced performance, and cost reduction while addressing the small business challenges of limited budgets, resources, personnel and technical expertise. Other Intel InBusiness network appliances include the Intel InBusiness Print Station, that provides ease of print sharing and the Intel InBusiness eMail Station for affordable, simple shared email access.
