Tony, Article... Intel To Invest In Speech Recognition

April 13, 1999

INFORMATIONWEEK : Intel (INTC-Nasdaq) plans to invest $30 million in Lernout & Hauspie Speech Products (LHSP- Nasdaq), a leading speech-recognition software vendor based in Belgium. After completing due diligence and getting regulatory ap- proval, Intel will acquire nonvoting securities that will be convertible to L&H common stock.

Intel has been investing regularly in technologies that require a lot of processing power. But analysts say this deal is about more than boosting demand for Intel's chips.

"These two companies are exploring a lot of strategic opportunities," says Donald Newman, an analyst with Ladenburg Thalmann. "By working together, they can better exploit the Internet and E-commerce."

L&H also said that its revenue for 1998 rose 113% from the previous year to $211.6 million. Net income, excluding one-time charges, was $37.8 million, up 89% from 1997. However, when one-time charges are included, the company lost $52.7 million-nearly four times its $13.3 million loss in 1997.

thanks Tony for the report.

i was very interested in the Y2k fear, and the gross margins.

both seem to be in good shape. perhaps not that exciting of a second Q, but a matter of months again before revenue growth picks up again...just like last year and...

i think the Lu news may help tomorrow too. they are up a lot in afterhours, but like Ibexx says, usually doesn't mean too much on the next day unless its huge volume.

cheers,
pigboy
