Why would this make a difference since Lam is no longer in the CVD biz?

Novellus rumored again to be acquiring Lam Research

By Jack Robertson MUNICH -- Reports are rampant again here at SEMI Semicon Europa 99 that Novellus Systems Inc. is negotiating to acquire Lam Research Inc. --this time fueled by the expiration of legal restraints on Novellus to make certain acquisitions in the chemical vapor desposition (CVD) field.

Two years ago, to settle a patent infringement suit brought by Applied Materials Inc., Novellus agreed not to acquire any competing business using the CVD materials involved in the case. The lawsuit covered a patent dispute over tetraethyl orthosilicate (TEOS) material used in CVD processing for interconnect layer dielectrics.

That prohibition has now expired, said Mark G. Fissel, general manager of the Novellus PVD and Electrofill Products group.

He said he had no information on the pervasive reports about acquiring Lam. Rumors periodically have flared up over the last 18 months that Novellus was purchasing Lam, only to have nothing transpire. Sources at Semicon Europa believed the lifting of shackles on Novellus' acquisition in the CVD field turned the Lam reports back on.
