Good evening folks! Long time no Talk! I though I would share my experience this mornignt to you all. I found the experience extremely enjoyable and entertaining.

This morning I went to a MSFT Windows2000 Tech Primer that was held in our city today. They talked all about what Windows2000 will have as features and they started explaining to the crowd on the real need for a Directory Service to replace all the disperate DSes that are currently out there (many of them their own). It is SOOOOO irnonic to to hear MSFT talking about the merits on an open-system, scaleable, single, reliable, replicable, Directory Service. I wanted to stand up and say - "Your right and NOVL has a mature one that you can use right now to address all the dreams you have just heard from the speaker".

After watching the demonstration from the MSFT SE's on Active Directory - NOVL HAS NOTHING TO FEAR WHEN MSFT AD SHOWS UP. What a peice of garbage. (Although I knew much of it) It still needs Domains. It still needs Trust relationships. It took this one server/10 user AD tree 30 seconds to add a user to the tree!!! The SE didnt even use the excuse that it was because of the Beta. He said it is because of the DNS searching method. Users are still stored and managed under individual servers. The administrative tools called MMC was very confusing to understand.

I can now see a real life example of why NOVL wants nothing more than to have MSFT release Windows2000 and Active Directory. With a product like that, any current DS will look fantastic. MSFT is in big trouble with this product!!!

And as for Windows2000. With all the hype that I have heard and read, I went to this tech presentation to hear and see what is so great about NT5 (ooops I meant Windows2000). I almost fell asleep. By the way, did you know that Windows2000 will now allow Administrators to setup User Disk Quotas?!?!? WOW! (NetWare has had that ability since NetWare 3!). These are basic features that MSFT is just now putting into their server product. They have also reduce the amount of times support staff have to reboot due to a system configuration change - ROFL!!

It was like watching a comedy show. I cannot see how any CIO or serious tech professional could sit there and actually be amazed by what they saw and heard. I just should my head countless times.

The only good and interesting part of the conference was when the General Maanger of Microsoft Canada spoke to the crowd. He actual said things that a normal MSFT Exec wouldnt say. He said a main reason they re-organized was because they were looking around and noticed how their competitors were bringing their products to market much faster than MSFT. He also said that competitors that he didnt think were competitors are now worrying him (do you think he was referring to NOVL).

Anyways, I thoroghly enjoyed going to this seminar. Active Directory is more of a joke than I had read. When a MSFT SE cannot make a MSFT product look respectable and important - you know that this product is in trouble.

PS - I felt like the Melissa virus in that room full of MSFT Geeks!

Cheers!
