Java flopped because it is slow. Nobody does slow anymore. Native C or machine language (gasp!) would work fine. XML script would be sufficiently fast if the script was compiled for most tasks. You could have an xml compiler. Why not.

Java lacks pointers so it is not a do all language I would like to write the Taj Mahal in. It is purely an extensible high security language so Its forte in the real networking world might he its power in CAD systems or distributer grafiks envi's.

I think a decent browser/GUI that ran directly on the framebuffer and had a built-in Java Virtual Machine would be a real hit. But this would be very similar to the JavaOS that has completely flopped from a marketshare standpoint, so I could be all wet.

Java is almost up to speed. MSFT's grip on the desktop is tenuous as they're under the antitrust spotlight. The more I read about XML, the more references I read to XML and Java (combo). This may be *exactly the direction things are going. It's not the same game it was 2 years ago.

Here's a link to one of several XML/Java pages on sun.com. There are similar pages and articles apart from the Sun website.
