Avici Unveils Chip Partner
By Joe McGarvey
April 12, 1999 2:43 PM ET

Next-generation router maker Avici Systems announced today that it will incorporate advanced semiconductors from LSI Logic into its forthcoming Terabit Switch Router.

The two companies combined engineering forces to create nine application-specific integrated circuits (ASICs) for Avici's high-speed Internet Protocol (IP) router, which is expected to ship in the second quarter.

Avici, similar to other start-ups in the IP router space, has stressed the importance ASICs will play in fortifying next-generation routers with the packet-forwarding muscle required to move IP-based data across the Internet backbone.
