Marshall,
One of the points made by Gail Naughton when taking about cartilage on CNBC was that their partner Smith&Nephew was number one in the area of orthopedic surgery. For S&N this is a win-win situation, not only do they get to sell the cartilage but tons of special instruments to perform the arthroscopic surgery.

Regarding your comments about managed care...arthroscopic surgery and a short hospital stay would be very attractive to them as an alternative to whole joint replacement.
