Evolution my dear sir. Did the four year olds of the late seventies know anything about PCs and MSFT then? When developers like Corel who are just releasing their Office Suite for Linux start to catch on, then Linux will grow even faster than its growing now. Currently Linux is the fastest growing OS in the market from a recent report I read about 3 weeks ago. I believe the report stated that they have gone from almost nothing to 17% marketshare. That is something all the other OSes should worry about. Once the OS becomes as popular and mainstream as Linux is well on its way to becoming, then more and more developers will develop for Linux and the circle repeats itself. Linux is a much more stable and higher performance OS than Win98. If and when developers produce products en-masse for Linux in the next 1 or 2 then the next generation of 4 year olds will be using Linux and its version on Corel Office (or heaven forbid MSFT's Linux version of Office once they see that they are missing out on too much revenue).

As for NT5/Windows2000, people in the industry will buy it. MSFT's market clout is too powerful for any of their products (no matter how bad it is) to become sellable. The question is to what extent will the industry embrace Windows2000 when Directory Services is now proving to be a critical technology component and MSFT's Active Directory is 5-6 years behind its competitors? How well will Windows2000 be embraced when based on MSFT's consistent track record their 64 bit version of NT will not be available for another 3 years while SUN,NetWare, AIX, and others will have their 64bit OS ready (or already do have it ready now - ie. NetWare) well before that. I guess we will see.

Might buy May options on Microsoft late this week depending on how other PC tech stocks are doing---especially if we continue to see weakness in the sector.
