Terayon Communications Systems shot up 6 5/16 to 53 1/4, clearing an 11-week base on four times average volume. Terayon provides cable operators with modem systems that support high-bandwidth applications like full-motion video and voice traffic.

The company came public in August at around $13 a share. It has yet to turn a profit, but sales have surged over the past five quarters - from $700,000 to $1.4 million to $2.4 million to $6.9 million to $9.4 million to $12.9 million.

Cable companies are upgrading systems to provide Internet service and other data communications.

Terayon's technology ''has advantages on cable systems that have been upgraded, and it's the only system I know that can be deployed on systems that have not been upgraded,'' said Jeffrey Lipton, an analyst at Hambrecht & Quist.
