Guangdong PTA Selects Newbridge Multiservice ATM Platform
for Province-wide Frame Relay Network - Fully-Managed
Networking Solution Consolidates Traffic Onto Single,Unifying ATM Backbone

APRIL 14, 1999
KANATA, ONTARIO--Newbridge Networks (NYSE: NN; TSE: NNC) today
announced it has won a major contract to supply the industry-
leading Siemens / Newbridge MainStreetXpress(tm) 36170
Multiservices Switch to Guangdong Post and Telecommunications
Administrative Bureau (GPTA) for a new, province-wide frame relay
network spanning more than 100 counties and cities in Guangdong
Province. On completion, the network will form one of the largest
of its type in China.
Part of a multiphase project, the scalable, multiservice,
multi-access platform will enable GPTA to consolidate X.25 and
frame relay traffic running over a Newbridge(r) digital data
network (DDN) onto a single, unified asynchronous transfer mode
(ATM) backbone. In the first phase of the project, GPTA will
deploy 128 MainStreetXpress 36170 Multiservices Switches to link
banks and other financial institutions, corporate customers and
government departments in 12 of Guangdong's largest cities.
"The network will effectively address the rapidly growing demand
for flexible, high-capacity data connectivity in Guangdong
Province," said Roger Fung, Executive Vice President, Asia
Pacific, Newbridge Networks. "By consolidating lower speed data
lines onto a single, broadband multiservice backbone, the new
network will also enable GPTA to dramatically cut capital and
operating costs, while providing the flexibility to meet future
growth in demand for data connectivity."
"The Newbridge(r) broadband ATM backbone solution integrates
seamlessly with GPTA's existing 1,200-node Newbridge 3600
MainStreet(r) Bandwidth Manager network, and the entire network
will be seamlessly managed end-to-end by the MainStreetXpress
46020 Network Manager and MainStreetXpress 48020 MultiNetwork
Service Controller," continued Mr. Fung.
The MainStreetXpress 46020 Network Manager's unique network
partitioning and operator profiling capabilities combine the
economies of scale of a shared network infrastructure with the
flexibility of a private network to provide highly granular
control over network resource assignment and operator actions.
The twelve cities to be linked under the first phase of the
project are Dongguan, Foshan, Guangzhou, Huizhou, Jiangmen,
Nanhai, Shantou, Shenzhen, Shunde, Zhanjiang, Zhongshan and Zhuhai.

Glen: Whilst convergent Technology is gaining momentum, there is not much progress on Convergent Billing. Currently an Individual gets
a monthly fistful of Bills ,Teleco, Energy,Hydro,Sears, etc etc. It would seem logical for all these to converge into one with resulting savings. I appreciate the TELCOS and NSP use Convergent Billing but I am surprised the idea has not expanded.

Do you know who are the principle software vendors in this domain.
