Rescued this from April 6, 1999 edition of NY Times before using it to start a fire in my wood stove.

Sumeria, 3200 B.C.
This Mesopotamian culture is generally thought to be the first
culture to produce written texts. The Sumerians used a stylus
and wet clay to record the ingredients of beer.

The moral of the story is that if you give people the incentive
to write...they will do do...those scorching, hot days in Sumeria
must have been quite an incentive!!

On another topic, but still a quote::::When L.B. Mayer died in Hollywood, a record crowd turned out for the funeral of this much
despised man.
Red Skelton ( ordinarily a run-of-the-mill comic) said::

" If you give the people what they want...they will come!! "
