rises

NEW YORK, April 14 (Reuters) - Shares in J.P. Morgan & Co.
Inc. rose in pre-open trading Wednesday after the investment
bank reported quarterly earnings well above Wall Street
estimates.

J.P. Morgan was trading at 136-1/4 on the Instinet electronic
broker system, up from a Tuesday close at 129-5/16. The shares
earlier traded at 135-1/2.

J.P. Morgan said its first-quarter earnings per share were $3.01. The consensus estimate of analysts
polled by First Call was $1.73.

Among other active issues, technology and telecommunications company Motorola Inc.
(NYSE:MOT - news) rose to 86 in pre-open trade from a Tuesday close at 82-15/16.

After markets closed Tuesday, Motorola reported first-quarter earnings that beat analysts' estimates,
and it forecast continued good results.

Telecommunications equipment maker Lucent Technologies Inc. (NYSE:LU - news) rose to 60-3/4
in pre-open dealings from a Tuesday close at 56-15/16 after the company said its second-quarter
earnings would meet or beat Wall Street estimates.

Intel Corp. (Nasdaq:INTC - news) rose to 60-7/8 from a Tuesday close at 60-1/2 after the
company reported first-quarter earnings that beat analysts' estimates. However, its revenues fell
short.

Sovereign Bancorp Inc. (Nasdaq:SVRN - news) rose to 20-1/4 from a 17-8/16 close after the
company said it was mulling the start of a separate Internet bank.

Seagate Technology Inc. (NYSE:SEG - news) rose to 28-1/4 from a close of 17-8/16 after the
company reported a third-quarter profit that beat most forecasts.
