Congolese Rebels Attend Lusaka Peace Talks

April 15, 1999

Lusaka, Zambia (PANA) - Preliminary talks on peace initiatives for Democratic Republic of Congo got underway in Lusaka Thursday with the participation of the country's rebels.

A reliable source told PANA that the current talks were mainly consultative, to agree on certain issues prior to a ministerial meeting and a summit by regional leaders mediating the conflict.

"As the president (Frederick Chiluba) said yesterday, the rebels are here and as of today, they are taking part in the preliminary consultation talks. There are so many things to be discussed and sorted out before the actual official meeting starts," the source said.

The UN special envoy to the DRC, Moustapha Niasse, who met the Chiluba Tuesday, was reported Thursday to have left the country.

But the source said he is expected back Saturday.
