I realize they aren't related, but it just seems a bit...ridiculous.
If a buyback is meant to drive up the price, but the price was already "up", then why split?
Since the buyback is using some of the sale of shares to buyback stock issuances in ESOP/other plans, then it seems to me that the best way to offset that is to use currently held shares to provide these plans with the needed shares, rather than actually selling to "buy".
As I said, I'm not an accountant...so there must be a good reason.
