Robert,

While it is true that the cable modems are contention-based like Ethernet and that you will probably receive the fastest connection times at first, I think that you will see the cable companies being forced to extend more local loops out into the neighborhoods if response time has too much degradation. People will start complaining about service and threaten to cancel if they don't.
