I call Alexandr Nevsky schlock because it is outright propaganda, created on order of the Soviet government for the purpose of mooning Hitler, and warning him that if he decided to invade, his army would suffer as the German army suffered at the hands of Alexandr Nevsky. Also, it was intended to rally the Russian masses, that they really could stand up to the Wehrmacht. It is very creative, and I love it, but IMHO it's not high art. Nor is Triumph of the Will, for the same reason, it's a "work for hire," and not the highest expression of the creator's vision.

Not that all works for hire are schlock, just ones where the artist is simply producing because he is paid to produce.

Maybe a better word is kitsch. You don't deny that Alexandr Nevsky is kitsch, do you?
