INTERNET (esecurities.W) April 14, 1999 -- [DBCC alliance]* AMTD "Posts Record Profits, New Accounts Soar", Beats Consensus.

OMAHA, Neb. (Reuters) - "Online brokerage firm AmeriTrade Holding Corp. (Nasdaq:AMTD - news) reported record profits that were double analysts' estimates and record sales for its fiscal second quarter Wednesday as the number of its trading accounts soared.

The electronic broker had net income of $8.1 million or 14 cents per share in the second quarter ended March 26, 1999, compared to a net loss of $300,000 in the year-ago period.

A consensus of analysts' estimates had pegged the nation's sixth largest online brokerage at seven cents per share, according to First Call, which tracks such data.

''We are very proud of our second quarter results,'' said J. Joe Ricketts, chairman and co-chief executive officer. ''We achieved record results in virtually every key operating and financial metric this quarter. We have demonstrated that AmeriTrade is the online broker of choice.''

AmeriTrade reported revenues of $63.7 million for the second quarter, a 112 percent increase over the same period a year ago.

A record 82,000 new accounts were opened in the second quarter, bringing the total number of discount brokerage accounts to 428,000 after factoring in the loss of 8,000 accounts in the second quarter, the company said.

''The growth in customer numbers is the most important measure of our success,'' Ricketts said. ''We are beginning the second half of our fiscal year with 428,000 core discount brokerage accounts, after achieving more than a four-fold increase in our core customer base in just six quarters.''

Average trades per day climbed 197 percent to 52,218 in the second quarter and assets in customer accounts reached $19.5 billion on March 26, a 93 percent increase over the year-earlier period..."
