Clarence, You are right the hot-swap issue IS confusing, and it is an issue I tried to investigate before I bought. I took your advice and applied it to both Dataport and DataStor docs/FAQs and am now better illuminated. Are DataPort "Hot-Swappable"? No, DataPorts are not "Hot Swappable". The "hot swappable" feature are determined by the controller. If the controller is designed to work in a "hot-swappable" environments, the DataPort will support it since the DataPort acts as a transparent device. -from a Dataport FAQ Both of our enclosures have the ability to work with a hot-swap system by virtue of the on/off switch, but to be truly hot swappable would need a function on the controller, or an equivalent software solution such as the "Hot Data Shuttle" found on the cyberguys.com site (only works under 95/98, seem to be made of plastic). As a Sidebar: the Datatrans can be had at cyberguys for $28 for the Aluminum rack and $18 for an Aluminum cassette total $46 OR you can buy the "kit" with both parts for "only $70" ha ha ha I love this stuff... In all seriousness I recommend the first option. :) ZP is again correct, matching drives do allow an instance/apperance of hot-swappability. Spots, I have a 7200 Seagate medallist pro and a 5200 Maxtor DiamondMax the IBM is a whisper compared to either one. Your are right though something has to attempted with these fans, I feel like I am living in an airplane hanger... Again, does anyone have any Linux/Real Tick III (or equivalent) links/resources? I would expect that from Unix's standing in the commercial financial sector there would be an enterprising Unix/Linux port of something exceptional in this burgeoning field. mowa
