victor...let me translate... Comments: Eckhard Pfeiffer, Compaq (CPQ) & Eric Schmidt, Novell (NOVL) CPQ was downgraded by many investment firms after unexpectedly disappointing earnings. Being surprised by CPQ's late announce investment firms exacted vengeance. They had all been misled to recommend CPQ to their customers and felt this was the only way to save face. CPQ is faced with a class action suit by investors who say CPQ failed to disclose information on the weakening of demand. With the money Mason made on trades and the fact that he might not be around to deal with that...he doesn't care. So what...fighting lawsuits will just impact future earnings, a little... Pfeiffer believes CPQ is on good strategic course. He feels the company is constantly giving information. Earnings release and guidance will be out on next Wednesday. "Strategic course sounds good....we are constantly giving information (concerning how DELL did it too, and bad the industry is) but no one wants to listen. I'm so misunderstood.....should I get a refund from Berlitz"....AltaVista???? Personal commitment to ongoing communications. "I'm a stockholder too...what else can I say?... I take responsibility.?...no, Clinton already wore that one out" Final days of the quarter can be pivotal in determining the outcome. "We knew how the quarter would end in Feb., but couldn't come up with an excuse....so we waited until the last moment, until we had to say something" The short fall expected is only 5% of the total estimate. "That's revenues...hope no one thinks of asking about net income".... Schmidt of Novell also feels that CPQ's broadening is working. "How did I get stuck next to Pfeiffer in this interview?.... (Now I know how Tony Blair felt during the Clinton/Lewinsky thing).... How can I say 'they bit off more than they can chew'...oh yes.... 'Broadening'" Feels Y2K issue has had no effect. To date. "Here's something I can add on a positive note.... better put a disclaimer in....'to date'....2000 isn't here yet" CPQ will pursue both the direct and indirect sales models in the future in order to take advantage of the internet. "Can't tell the channel we want to dump them now...not until we have our direct model working" CPQ and NOVL have announced a caching system which will have ten times higher performance.
