Anyone following ETEK? Fibre optic/Bandwidth play, analyst upgrade, demand in this sector termed: Explosive! Ride-the-light!RESEARCH ALERT-E-Tek Dynamics raised after Q3

NEW YORK, April 14 (Reuters) - U.S. Bancorp Piper Jaffray said on Wednesday analyst Conrad Leifur raised his rating on E-Tek Dynamics Inc <ETEK.O>, a maker of fiber optic components, to buy from neutral after third quarter results came in "well above" his expectations.

Shares rose 3-7/8 at 47-1/8, with the stock touching a new high of 48-3/8 just after the opening of trading.

E-Tek, based in San Jose, Calif., posted third-quarter results after the bell on Tuesday. Both revenues and earnings per share topped Leifur's forecasts, with revenues up "a phenomenal" 28 percent compared with the second quarter. He was expecting growth of 8 percent. Profits also jumped, with earnings per share at $0.14 on a diluted basis, beating his $0.11 estimate.

"Demand for optical components can only be described as explosive," he said, and raised his profit estimates for the fourth quarter to $0.14 a share on $52 million in revenues, up from $0.12 on revenues of $45 million.

He raised his price target to $50 from $28.
