No ear for him: O.J. Simpson Fights Off Gunman, Bites His Hand 05:10 p.m Apr 14, 1999 Eastern LOS ANGELES (Reuters) - Police Wednesday searched for a man who allegedly held up O.J. Simpson at gunpoint but fled after the football legend wrestled with him and bit his gun hand. Simpson, who was acquitted of criminal murder charges in the slayings of his ex-wife and her friend but who was later found responsible for their deaths in civil court, told police the gunman approached him Tuesday afternoon after he had finished playing a round of golf. Los Angeles police spokesman Jason Lee quoted Simpson as saying he was in his sports utility vehicle changing out of his golf shoes at the Los Feliz golf course when a ''clean cut'' man approached him brandishing a pistol. Simpson offered the man his wallet and the vehicle but instead the gunman ordered him into the back of the vehicle. ''Mr. Simpson distracted the suspect and grabbed the handgun. The suspect maintained custody of the firearm (and) abandoned the robbery attempt and fled to his vehicle,'' Lee said. There were no witnesses to the incident, he added. Simpson told KCBS television he bit his assailant on the hand to force him to drop the gun. ''I bit him,'' he said. Simpson said he cut his finger on the gun barrel during the struggle and then chased the man when he fled in a white van. ''After we fought, he took off and then I chased him. I called 911 (police emergency number) and told them I was chasing him,'' he said. The police told him to stop the chase and he did, Simpson added. He described his assailant as a ''good looking guy, whitish hair, 40 to 50, healthy, in shape. Not a bum.'' Simpson, an avid golfer, was found not guilty in 1995 of the June 1994 murders of his ex-wife, Nicole Brown Simpson, and Ronald Goldman, but was found responsible for their deaths by a civil court jury in 1997 and ordered to pay the victims' families $33.5 million in damages.
