Don't know if you've seen the Beck's ads making fun of Germans...dont know if they run in Britian....but they are hilarious....A German stands on a lonely stage, with a single, focused spotlight, wearing a suit and a "slips" tie....he says in a heavy German accent..."I just flew in from Berlin, and boy are my arms tired"...joke bombs..no applause...commentator says..."Germans don't do comedy...but they DO do beer"...They also are running similar comments about Germans and romance, other subjects... To see EP say the words, "You have my personal commitment"....that is not German-speak...that is American-speak....make no mistake, EP has a German soul (I do not mean this all bad, I am half-German), but I know (have many) German (friends) who adopt an American "personna" readily....and, as an effect, they lose the accent easier...(don't ask me to explain)....it is, somewhat, a matter of the heart.... EP still has the German core...therefore, the communication problems, ineffectiveness, and struggle speaking American win-on-style-points-CEO communication speak..probably (in his heart of hearts) believes some of this is BS.....and it continues to effect his presentation......I do agree that he did show a little passion with the "commitment" comment, although he also looked like he had been beaten up (physically/emotionally), and it appeared to be a hard-won concession... As far as EP saying he's been working on the communication of this problem....that is weak, IMO...there was no plan to do anything (IMO) but the reaction was so bad over the weekend, that I think he knew he had to come out....but it has not look planned, and he looks like he has been scrambling.... Fortunately, for now, it looks like this chapter (bad news/lecture circuit answering same negative questions over and over) is about closed..thank goodness! You'd think the next 30 days can bring neutral (at worse) and possibly better news.... Just calling it the way I see it... I agree with your point about the thread getting Ted's reaction....terrific.... IMO, Compaq is cheap, but there are safer plays out there, IMO...
