Richard,

>> * Current stats for Apple bring 43 percent of iMac buyers new to the platform. 32 percent were first time computer buyers and 11 percent were Windows users.

My brother-in-law purchased and installed a floppy on their iMac yesterday. Without knowing anything about computers it took him about 10 minutes of following the instructions to install the USB floppy. The reason the iMac is so popular is because it makes sense to the consumer; like a stereo system it is something they feel comfortable in setting up and adding new components. Real plug-n-play. If they had a Wintel box I would be spending this weekend fighting with the damn thing like I do with the month-old laptop that they gave me at work.

From 15 years of experience with the IBM PC I will honestly say that the iMac is the only "consumer" computer that was ever built; all the rest require too much technical know-how and maintenance to be considered a consumer item. The iMac is not the perfect consumer item but the closest the industry has come so far.

Cheers,

Norm
