Here is a bit of news from Asia regarding the prospects of PC sales in the region for 1999.

SINGAPORE (04/14/99) -

The top four PC suppliers -- Compaq Computer Corp., Dell Computer Corp., IBM Corp. and Hewlett-Packard Co. (HP)-- have increased their worldwide market share from just above 25 percent in 1995 to around 40 percent today, according to IDC figures.

The second-tier of PC vendors have lost 10 percentage points in market share for the same period and hold a combined market share of around
30 percent, equal to the share held by small local vendors and no-brand computers.

Similar patterns can be seen in Asia, with the three fastest-growing vendors in 1998 being Dell, HP and China's Legend Group, with the latter posting 73 percent unit sales growth over 1997.

"Dell's direct sales model has been very successful, and the company has just opened a facility in China to address that market," said Anderson. "Legend was very strong because of its position in China, its pricing, and its ability to tap the home market."

Other vendors which showed positive sales growth in the Asia-Pacific region were IBM and Toshiba Corp., IDC figures showed. Worst hit were vendors which relied heavily on the Southeast Asia market, like Acer Group, or on sales in South Korea, like Trigem Computer Inc. and Samsung Electronics Co. Ltd.

PC vendors need to think of new strategies for generating profits, according to Anderson. "Making money on PC hardware is getting very difficult," he said. "PC sales need to be used as a wedge in order to add on sales of services, e-commerce, peripherals and software. Vendors must think beyond the box."

Despite encouraging growth projections for 1999, South Korea, Malaysia, Singapore, the Philippines, Thailand and Indonesia will post 1999 PC sales lower than in pre-downturn 1997, Anderson said.
