I think Ciena's recent moves (both up or down) show that the stock is not currently tied to market swings. However, if a big correction does occur, 14 is feasible, but I think Ciena will post a slight profit, and therefore, it will not see 14 because of that.

And actually, pessimism can be profitable for us longs. A surprise profit can lead to a good upswing, and a slight loss would be already be factored in to the price.

Anyone know of any planned "event" that can strongly affect Ciena's price before earnings?

I disagree with part of your post "...the products they base their bussiness on will become commoditized (Lucent-Nortel-Pirelli- etc)in the near future" The Omnia and Lightera acquistions were made to combat this phenomenon as it gives them a more denfensible position in the network and makes their margins more defensible.
