Antivirus software sales spurred by Melissa virus

April 14, 1999 08:39 PM
NEW YORK, April 14 (Reuters) - Retail sales of virus detection software increased more than 67 percent during the week after the outbreak of the Melissa computer virus, according to research firm PC Data.

The virus, which spread itself through infected e-mail systems, apparently motivated computer users to buy detection software such as Norton Antivirus by Symantec Corp. SYMC and VirusScan and Dr. Solomon's Anti-Virus by Network Associates Inc. NETA .

Unit sales of Norton Antivirus increased 78 percent and Network Associates' two virus detection titles gained 51 percent during the week of March 28 to April 3, according Reston, Va.-based PC Data.

Virus detection software is currently installed on 35 percent of PCs in the U.S. and Canada, PC data said.

it is very obvious we will see great results...
otherwise, symc would never have announced the new
CEO one day before the earnings release (Eubanks
would've had to do the talking alone and they would've
have announced the new guy a few days after the
results to support the stock if thinks were slow
during Q1).
