Marc, while I appreciate your logical approach, I cannot not buy into the argument.

There are dozens of civil wars raging around the globe with hundreds of thousands of people dying. I have not heard how it is in the U.S. national interest to become involved in this conflict, while ignoring the others. So, if we are ignoring other equally righteous conflicts, our involvement cannot be considered or characterized as moral.

Our troops in Bosnia that were going to home by Christmas (several years ago) are still there. If there is no clearly defined end game, the game should not be played as it is not logical and not practical.
Instead, how about a nice game of chess?

I have just witnessed too many times in my life where out troops and resources are put in harms way without the will to follow through to the logical conclusion and I consider this a waste of both! No, I fear that there being no practical or moral reasons for our involvement, the reasons are political, and I always am concerned when we get involved in political conflicts that are clearly not within our sphere of influence. Historical results have not gone well.

I believe that there are powerful economic and political forces that will not be comfortable with us coming into their backyard. I fear they will attempt to ensure that we don't have the political will to come back for a long time to come. I fear that this leads to wasted lives and billions of wasted dollars.

My grandmother always said if they took the profit out of war, there would be far fewer wars. Churchill said: The downfall of any great nation is when it believes itself to be the policeman for the world. The Duke of Wellington said: Next to a battle lost, the saddest thing is a battle won.

No, Marc, our involvement in this conflict is not effective, practical or moral. This is what scares the hell out of me! Sorry, to make such a long-winded response, but you hit a nerve and it is April 15th.
