Will,

You do an excellent job describing the market for Kopin's GaAs business. Allow me to add a bit more clarification.

AXT grows substrates used by Kopin to deposit HBT device structures. Kopin then sells there wafers to circuit manufactures like Alpha. None of the companies compete with one another. In some cases, like Alpha's, the circuit manufacturer may have in house epi capabilities. In Alpha's specific cases, they have FET capabilities but not HBT. Alpha partnered with NDI for the HBT circuit fab technology. NDI will fab the circuits from wafers like the ones Kopin supplies.

Aixtron supplies MOCVD hardware which Kopin purchases to grow the HBT device (deposit layers). Aixtron does not compete with Kopin, or Alpha or AXT.

Emcore has adopted a business model where they will compete with almost everyone except the substrate supplier (AXT). As any business student knows, a company competing with their customers is a dangerous situation. It seems that so far, Emcore has not had much success at this approach at least in the electronics portion of the market.

Hope this helps,

Best Regards,
