AT&T CORP said it will begin billing all its basic residential
customers a monthly minimum charge of $3 beginning in July. About
15% of AT&T's customers spend less than $3 a month, the company
said. The charge will help cover the company's $300 mln annual
costs for billing, account maintenance and customer support for
those accounts. In August AT&T instituted the charge for new
customers only. The $3 charge will now apply to all customers with
a basic long-distance package, regardless of when they signed up
with AT&T. (Reuters 04:11 PM ET 04/06/99)
