Shorts can work either for or against the longs. Enough shorts selling, and you have the beginnings of a downward spiral.

But since shorts can only sell on an uptick, they're prohibited from affecting the stock price in unison. So they net contribute to the stock price rising.

There will always be plenty of people who took Finance 101 and learned about discounted cash flow and at heart believe in fundamental valuation. I wouldn't worry about all the Amazon shorts giving up.
