It's probably a bit of both. Since the days of VCR / Beta, Ampex and Sony have done plenty of business as well as lawsuits. Lardner's "Fast Forward Hollywood, the Japanese and the VCR Wars" details this history.#

What is encouraging about the Sony / IBM deal is the affirmation of the viability of that specialized storage market. It has come of age. Ampex / HP can now position their wares right along side - if they wish to. Fundamentals of marketing. Better a field of competitors in a growing market than a lonesome polecat with a product too far ahead of it's demand, ie. Ampex and DST circa 1992?. Most likely, there will be plenty of demand for each of these behemoths.

#Title is long out of print. It took me almost a year of booksearch to get a copy. If there are regulars who are fascinated by Ampex and this industry history let me know. Arrangements can be made to circulate.
