I actually just ordered a sparc classic to use as an xterm/dumbterm/dev-machine. They say it performs about on par with a 486/100.

How old is a SPARC 20? Why would you compare such an old machine with a Pentium II? Some early Sun's were based on Intel 386 chips -- why not just do your comparison against those?

Well they might try if we had a more public profile but SUN is pretty smug about their machine centric position. Why would would pay big money for a SPARC processor that performs about as good as a 260 MHZ Pentium? They can buy a DEC alpha or a 450 MHZ Pentium II and run Linux for 1/5 the cost, plus outperform the SPARC by 300%.

E.- You made is a 'troll' level post here. It's just wildly inaccurate. Mindcraft wouldn't even make a claim like this if they were 100% owned by Microsoft. In fact, an 360mhz Ultra IIi outperforms a 450mhz PII and is competitively priced. You'd really have to go out of your way to configure an Ultra for some esoteric performance comparison to get anything close to what you've posted.

Sun is blowing the doors of of Compaq's Alpha. The sales numbers are not indicative of marketing slight of hand by Sun. There's actual price/performance value there.
