Wooly (OT)--funny you mention David Foster Wallace. I was in the MFA creative writing (fiction emphasis) program with him at the University of Arizona in the mid-eighties (sat by him, as a matter of fact). It didn't take a rocket scientist to figure that he would likely be successful, and he actually was one of the reasons I left the program to get into politics--he was obviously so much more talented than me, and I didn't want to spend the rest of my life eating cold spaghetti out of a can in a garret somewhere... I saw him a couple of years ago in DC where he was giving a reading--strange to see the rock star atmosphere surrounding him now, when I knew him as just another student, albeit a very talented one. I've got several of his books, but am not familiar with the piece that you reference in your post to Gilder. Which book is it in?
