What about J.S. Mill?

His mental problems were the prime reason I didn't name him as a favorite home schoolee, but the temptation must have been overwhelming to James both philosophically and paedogogically. J.S. was so compliant and cooperative and smart that what schoolmasterish parent could have let him alone. I was always surprised that J. M. Keynes was allowed to go off to school (where he thrived). But English public schools were much better after Arnold's reforms at Rugby. Even so, they were and I suspect still are hotbeds of homosexuality, so many boys in English upper and upper middle classes have been pressured to participate or worse.
