Pasminco Says Cockle Creek Zinc Smelter Shut for Six Weeks

Melbourne, April 15 (Bloomberg) -- Pasminco Ltd., the
world's largest miner and refiner of zinc, said it halted zinc
production at its Cockle Creek smelter after a metal leak.
The company will lose between 5,000 metric tons and 6,000
tons of zinc production while the leak is repaired, which
should take about six weeks. That loss will be made up once
the repairs are complete, the company said.
''Alternative arrangements have been made to ensure
customers receive a continuous supply of metal while repairs
are completed,'' Pasminco said in a statement.
Cockle Creek produced 71,291 metric tons of zinc in 1997-
98. Zinc is used to galvanize steel.
Pasminco shares rose 8 cents, or 6.2 percent, to A$1.37 a
share.
