I would say ALWAYS. But sometimes we do not have the capacity to carry the losses while we reach our objectives. Although shorting is a lot more risky because the overall trend is upward and will always be (You may disagree on that ? :-) But thats just a difference of opinion) and while longs just have to wait patiently (I waited almost 3 months on those YHOO calls), shorts may not have the luxury of time.

Boxing seems to be a terrific strategy. I just don't have that kind of capital to tie up in creating a box, otherwise I'd love to try it myself.

But you miss the huge moves in these stocks by following that
strategy. If you had bought AOL at the October lows you would be up over 500 % by now. I beleive trading in and out is inefficient
especially in these volatile markets where it is easy to get whipsawed.
