solns for Microsoft platform

APR 14, 1999, M2 Communications - ATLANTA -- Microsoft Corp. today
announced that a growing number of knowledge management solutions are
being developed by independent software vendors (ISVs) on the Microsoft
BackOffice family and Office platforms, giving customers one of the
widest ranges of application choices for their needs. A great variety
of workflow and collaboration, messaging, document management, and
business intelligence applications are shipping today on Microsoft SQL
Server, Microsoft Exchange Server and Microsoft Site Server, all of
which utilize Microsoft Office.

A number of ISVs, Microsoft Certified Solution Providers (MCSPs) and
other Microsoft associates are demonstrating their solutions at the
Microsoft Partner Pavilion during the Association for Information and
Image Management (AIIM) '99 conference and exposition in Atlanta, April
13-15 (booth 3734), including 80-20 Software, Abuzz, Action
Technologies Inc., Altris Software Inc., ByteQuest Technologies Inc.,
Compaq Computer Corp., Documentum Inc., Eastman Software, FileNET
Corp., IntraNet Solutions Inc., JetForm Corp., Keyfile Corp.,
MacroSoft, Meta4Spain SA, Microbank Software Inc., Network Solutions
Inc. (NSI), OpenText Corp., Pacific Edge Software, PCDOCS Inc.,
Staffware Corp., TREEV Inc. and Xerox Corp.

In addition, recent independent tests performed by Data
Communications and NSTL Inc. ("Lab Test: Easier E-Mail," Data
Communications, March 21, 1999)* found that Exchange Server 5.5
performed up to eight times faster than competing e-mail server
platforms, including Lotus Notes and Domino. According to the study,
Exchange Server was the fastest SMTP server tested, accepting 94
messages per second; in contrast, Novell accepted 46 messages per
second; Sun, 22 per second; and the remaining products, 20 or less.
Tests also showed that Exchange Server had the second-best performance
on the POP test, and outperformed Lotus, Sun and Novell on account
creation tests.

The study's findings reflect what more and more customers have
already determined - that Microsoft Exchange Server is the best
platform technology for their knowledge management needs. The Computer
Solution Company (TCSC), an Eastman Software premier partner, uses
Eastman Software's Work Management for Exchange (WMX) with Microsoft
Exchange and the Outlook messaging and collaboration client as the
preferred platform for knowledge management solutions serving a number
of enterprise accounts. Examples of solutions implemented for major
customers include an enterprise sales management system, an internal
audit system, a sales proposal system and an electronic drawing
distribution system.

"Microsoft Exchange and Outlook combined with Eastman's WMX products
create a powerful solution that outperforms Lotus Notes in almost every
measurable category," said David Romig II, TCSC principal. "The synergy
created by Microsoft platform technologies and Eastman's cooperative
product and marketing strategies have had, and will continue to have, a
profound effect on TCSC's ability to provide our customers with
superior knowledge management alternatives."

According to Peter McKenney, CEO at Cipher Systems, the Microsoft
BackOffice platform offers customers a dependable, scalable messaging
standard. "Cipher Systems utilizes the Microsoft Exchange and Office
platforms to offer our customers a high degree of integration between
enterprise-scale messaging and data warehouse, automation and workflow
tool sets as in our leading knowledge management application, Knowledge
Works," said McKenney. "Our customers ask us all the time to layer on
business-needs functionality that leverages their core messaging
capabilities. Exchange Server gives us that ability, and our customers
are happy."

Documentum Inc. has developed enterprise document management
solutions on the Microsoft platform for several years. "Documentum's
Enterprise Document Management System takes full advantage of SQL
Server 7.0's improved performance and reliability," said Whitney
Martin, group product marketing manager at Documentum. "Microsoft's
platform technology enables Documentum to continually offer our Global
2000 customers true scalability, security and price performance."

"As these tests demonstrate, Microsoft offers software vendors the
best foundation for delivering enterprisewide knowledge management
solutions to their customers," said Donna Conner, knowledge management
solutions industry manager at Microsoft. "Because of the growing number
of ISVs developing on SQL Server, Exchange Server and Site Server,
customers are able to choose the solution that meets their knowledge
management needs with the assurance that they're also getting optimal
application integration, performance and security."

Microsoft Exchange Server 5.5 provides a reliable, scalable platform
for business-critical messaging. Together with Microsoft Office and
Outlook, it offers the richest set of products for messaging and
collaboration available on the Windows NT Server operating system.
Microsoft SQL Server 7.0 is a leading Windows NT Server-based database,
delivering business advantage and improved decision-making in addition
to price/performance, scalability and Microsoft BackOffice integration.
This full-featured technology platform gives software vendors the
opportunity to offer unique Microsoft-based applications, allowing
businesses to find a full-featured, enterprise-ready knowledge
management solution for their companies.

Founded in 1975, Microsoft (Nasdaq "MSFT") is the worldwide leader in
software for personal computers. The company offers a wide range of
products and services for business and personal use, each designed with
the mission of making it easier and more enjoyable for people to take
advantage of the full power of personal computing every day.
