I had a similar experience, but what it soured me on was specifically the Catholic Church

At the age at which this happened, the Catholic Church was Christianity to me; I was vaguely aware that there were other religions and other branches of Christianity, but the substantive differences were way beyond me. I never felt much need to replace the abandoned Catholicism with anything else. My ethical foundation, to the limited extent to which I have one, is based more on the sense of decency and fairness imparted by my parents then on any formal religious teaching. It could of course be argued that their sense of decency and fairness was an artifact of their religious tradition, but of this I am not sure; I have encountered these qualities too many times in non-Christian cultures to believe that they are the exclusive product of Christianity.

I would say that God is our rendition of the voice of the conscience, rather than the opposite.
