ACTV Hosts First Live Online Learning Event Featuring Patented HyperTV Technology

First-of-its-Kind Program Links Students and Teachers from Nebraska Schools to Smithsonian Institution in Washington, DC

NEW YORK--(BUSINESS WIRE)--April 15, 1999-- ACTV, Inc. (NASDAQ:IATV - news) will host the first live online learning event featuring its patented HyperTV(TM) technology this Friday, April 16. Sponsors of the event, called ConferNet '99, include ACTV, Apple Computer, Inc. (NASDAQ:AAPL - news), Cox Communications (NYSE:COX - news) and the U.S. Department of Education.

During ConferNet '99, two hundred students will log on to eSchool® Online, ACTV's first application of its HyperTV technology, from their classrooms in five different school districts throughout Nebraska. ConferNet '99 is an online conference which will use eSchool® to link and synchronize video with streamed audio and Web images from the collection of the Smithsonian Institution in Washington, DC. In addition, eSchool® will allow for live interactive chat sessions among students and teachers, and live question-and-answer sessions between students and docents at five leading museums nationwide. The entire online conference experience will be archived for later on-demand access by students or teachers.

Senator Bob Kerrey (D-NE), who will introduce the online event in a recorded message and who was instrumental in securing a federal grant for the project, said: ''Friday's event is part of a technological revolution that is taking place across America. Without leaving their classrooms, two hundred students in Nebraska will have the opportunity to use the resources of five of America's leading art museums through the Internet, view major works of art and converse with respected experts in art history. We are grateful to the U.S. Department of Education, through a Technology Innovation Challenge Grant, and ACTV for helping make this exciting learning experience possible for our students.''

William C. Samuels, chairman and CEO of ACTV, said, ''This event is a demonstration of how HyperTV can create new communities that bridge traditional boundaries in pursuit of a positive goal. Whether it's for education, entertainment or other types of programming, HyperTV offers a powerful, patented environment for marrying Internet content and traditional video programming in a way that has real benefits for programmers and end users alike.''

Officials from the following museums are participating in ConferNet '99: The Smithsonian Institution's National Museum of American Art in Washington, DC; The National Museum of Wildlife Art in Jackson Hole, WY; The Joslyn Art Museum in Omaha, NE; The Sheldon Memorial Art Gallery and Sculpture Garden in Lincoln, NE; and the Museum of Nebraska Art in Kearney, NE.

Bruce J. Crowley, president of HyperTV Networks, Inc., a subsidiary of ACTV, Inc., said, ''By enabling the delivery of this state-of-the-art, multiple-media experience, HyperTV demonstrates the true potential of today's network technology and new broadband infrastructure to deliver a more compelling and memorable event for everyone involved.''
