Michael: He is a hard man to or even understand. I suspect that a lot of the current passion arises from losses people have suffered - and the heat that brokers are getting for recommending CPQ.
I agree that it is depressing in both a psychological and share price sense, BUT at the end of the day, the share price will go up on the company performance. Brokers will be glad to tell their clients "I told you so" - although there will probably always be some resentment.

But COMPAQ is held by more institutions than ever before (I'll try to post the numbers) and there are millions of investors out there who don't know and couldn't care less who runs the company. When it starts moving they will look at the price, the p/e and the projections and they will buy shares in the worlds No.1 PC maker and No.2 computer company after IBM.

Guru journalists, lead from the rear and they will start touting again when the price moves up - they will be shameless as usual. Bugeyes will tell his groupies that he had already covered his short position and had written calls. They will write stories about how COMPAQ has been resurrected. Analysts will start upgrading within a month from now and 100% will have revised earnings estimates up within 4 months. 50% will have upgraded their recommendation. It is all so inevitable.

Looks like DELL is bid up about a point this morning. Maybe some of the pressure will ease today. El

Dear Michael: I believe it. Once a company acquires the distrust of analysts it takes a long time to earn it back. Analysts, IMHO, tend to follow the leader so the whole bunch have to be won back. This will not be easy. It is incredible IMHO if the Board doesnt seriously consider dumping not only EP but the CFO as well. I believe they have proven they are not up to the task of managing such a major corporation. JDN
