Microsoft warms up China for Windows 2000 -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- BEIJING, April 15 (Reuters) - Microsoft MSFT.O and a handful of computer manufacturers kicked off a marketing campaign in China on Thursday to promote computers capable of running the next generation of the Windows NT operating system. Microsoft's new operating system, a critical product called Windows 2000, is due for release later this year. It is an upgraded version of the company's popular NT system, which is designed for businesses rather than individual consumers. The marketing campaign would allow PC makers to label their computers as Windows 2000 compatible as long as the machines met technical standards set by Microsoft. PC makers that have agreed to particpate in the programme include Dell DELL.O, Compaq CPQ.N,International Business Machines IBM.N and Hewlett Packard HWP.N of the United States, along with Chinese firms Legend and Founder. "In order to be in the programme, we've defined a stringent technical bar," John Jenkins, Microsoft's head of computer sales and marketing, said at a press conference in Beijing. Desk tops deemed "Windows 2000 ready" would be pre-loaded with Windows NT 4.0, and have at least 64 megabytes of RAM and a processor speed of at least 300 megahertz, Jenkins said. An IBM executive said his company already had Windows 2000 compatible computers on the market in China, but added that the machines' sales volume was small given their relatively high cost. "It's still for high-end commercial desktops," said Howell Ma, IBM China's consumer division manager. REUTERS
