Right - the Maurice argument of 30 licensees. I think we all got that by now. But what if a company consistently stumbles at manufacturing and marketing the consumer products? Why is it in a consumer business in the first place and to what extent will the licensing fees cover disappointing product sales? That's something the "30 licensees" mantra does not address. We don't know how well Qualcomm competes against major brands, because it has had little exposure to real competition before this year. But looking at the models and the recent pattern of failed Q-phone launches the signs are not encouraging.
